This Wreckage

As His Majesty the Emperor’s Expedition Force sets down on the shores of a mysterious continent, dark forces are already waiting…

First released in 2008, This Wreckage is a massive singleplayer action-adventure RPG map for Warcraft III: the Frozen Throne. Version Gamma is compatible only with version 1.24+ of Warcraft III, due to additional engine features added to the game in that version.

WARNING: there may be some issues with This Wreckage in the new patches (1.27 and above). I am looking into making the necessary fixes, but in the mean time, if you’d like to downgrade to 1.26 for the authentic experience, this thread on the Hive Workshop has links and details!

  1. Where can the Living Stone quest be obtained? It says it has ne requirements. I already killed Fallen Stones III and finished all other side quest that are possible to do at this point. Strange, I finished the game two times before and I had no problem with that quest. I really want to see the secret ending…

  2. Neither WtFSA or This Wreckage show in WC3 when I go to singleplayer custom game, I got around this with WtFSA by opening in WorldEdit and testing the map. but I can’t open This Wreckage. Anyone know how to get them to show in WC3/why they aren’t or a way I can play this wreckage? I reinstalled WC3 just to replay these…

    • WC3 has a limit to how long the path/filename can be to a map — try renaming them or placing them in a directory lower down the heirarchy (e.g. Maps\WtFSA.w3x rather than Maps\FrozenThrone\Scenario\WhenTheFreedomSlipsAway.w3x). Also make sure you have the latest patch.

  3. Very nice map, RDZ, very very nice indeed. I love the characters and their dialogues ๐Ÿ˜€ .In fact, I would have been happy to pay for a game of this quality, so if you take donations, let me know – I really appreciate the effort you have put into this.

On the bugs side of things, I believe I have found 2 that bothered me:

First, I am confident I know where the panther’s den is, but it never opened up. Nothing special happened after defeating the stone panther (e.g. no comments from Henrik). The quest mentioned something about the panther coming to life in the night, but I believe I killed him during the day. Maybe this has something to do with it? On a related note, could this mean that I will not be able to find all four Phat Lewts?

Second, you mentioned somewhere that the fallen tree which prevents you from returning from the Jungle directly to the swamp is meant to disappear a few quests later. I am about to embark on the final quest and it is still there for me, so I suspect that something went wrong there too.

Other than that, it has been quite smooth sailing (except perhaps for some finickiness with item stacking).

    • No, no money needs to change hands — your kind words are enough. ๐Ÿ™‚

The panther’s den is hidden in the middle of the jungle. It is meant to open up when you just walk up to the entrance (I think there is a patch of flowers); if you hit it early, Henrik will make a nondescript comment on entry, but if you go in after killing the panther the Scholar’s notes should appear and you can finish the quest from there.

I’m sure I’ve looked at the triggers for the tree several times before. I can’t remember precisely when it’s meant to get the chop, but it should be well before the finale. Alas, the map’s been “finished” for quite some years so there’s not much chance of a bug-fix release after so long!

  7. Who or what triggers the quest “Hollow Sword”? I have finished every quest except that one. Also, there is a bug: When Henrik get teleported to the Tomb of Anak’Hul, the Gnoll is not frozen like others, then he’ll tries to follow Henrik and die a dog dead.

    Like

    • The Hollow Sword quest is triggered when you find the sword itself. It is stored in a barrel in Captain Gryphon’s bandit camp (he is obviously too stupid to use the thing himself).

And you’re right, the Gnoll isn’t paused — he’s ally number 6 and the Tomb systems only count to 5. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

      • Ahh, thanks. Another question, sometimes the scholar talk more about the story, but I only spotted two – they discussed gods and stuffs, so are there any more talking? Or there is a special requirement for that?
By the way, I’ve started playing your maps starting with WTFSA this week and find the stories quite inspiring. Thank you for your time.

        Like

      • The Scholars that have something fully story-relevant to say had to be easily accessible to reduce the risk of it being skipped over, so if there’s something important to be said it’ll either be an easy quest or they’ll just say it up front (like the retired Scholar). There aren’t any special requirements or branches, the Scholars all act the same no matter what happens.

Glad to see people are still enjoying this stuff even years down the line. ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. I have some questions, sire. Where can i find the 2nd “cache”??? I found the 1st one from some random rocks at the beach, I’ve been searching for hours but still no trace where to find it. Also when you enter the cave at the mountains is it really pitch black inside??? I mean I can’t see henrik and the team, I have to click alot everywhere just to move them around to a specific place. The quest about that sword with the missing piece was also hard, i found the sword but the missing part was hard to locate then I went to that murgul base and if not because of the zoom function I wouldn’t find that glyph on the ground hahaha, also that random scene where a guy was running was funny… he died and dropped a boot of speed, very useful :D… thanks for the map, the best map I have ever played ๐Ÿ™‚

    Like

    • The caches should be hidden inside destructible rocks inside the main compound, I can’t remember precisely where. I think one is just outside Stentopol and one is near the north gate.

To get lights in the cave, you need to go to WC3’s Options menu and set “Lighting” to “High”. Otherwise all the lovely coloured glows on your weapons and torches don’t show.

      • I got bugged when I defeated the huge constructs and it’s minions, I almost died there and after that I can no longer proceed to another room or hallway out the cave, it keeps saying that i need to destroy the constructs first but I already did and now i’m stuck, I tried to save the game and reload but still the same thing happens… now henrik and friends are stuck inside the cave for hours trying to figure out if there’s a switch to click or any obelisk to be destroyed.

        Like

      • If this has happened there’s not much you can do but load a saved game from before the end sequence started. It could be that one or two of the constructs’ unit AI has bugged and caused them to run away out of the area, so if you’ve got a summoning spell or two you might be able to entice them back in by tripping the summons over the activation zones… This is unlikely to work, though.

  11. Finally finished it. Scored 68144 in just under 10 hours with 52 quests completed (apparently that wasn’t all of them…damn). Finn’s Magnador used to be my favorite quest, but This Wreckage is in a class all its own. I was engaged in the story and game mechanics the entire time I was playing it, and that is no small feat. I have played thousands of games and mods in the last 30 years and this is definitely in the top tier. Fantastic job, RDZ!

  12. This map is incredible. I especially enjoyed all of the dialogue/writing, like when the scholar is questioning why the “gods” need our servitude. I usually get very bored of WC3 maps, in general, on account of the endless hack & slash action going on. The story in this is what makes it.

I do have one question…what is the song that plays in the ruined temple/jungle area with the ambient voices. All of the music choices were excellent, but that one in particular is both my favorite, and the only one that I do not know where to find. Thanks in advance.

The beach area is DigSh, the central compound is UTemple, the swamp is Tunnels (from Deus Ex rather than Unreal), the jungle is… War…something? Ugh, I can’t remember, I’ll need to get back to you on that one. The underground mountain is Hub[something]… Oh this is embarrassing. The “gauntlet” is GoDown (from Unreal Tournament), and the finale is Area 51… I think it’s Area51Bunker or something like that.

    • Do you mean the big door leading to the west, deeper into the mountain? In the chamber just before the door, there are a number of small obelisks arranged around the wall. You should try to destroy these, but concentrate on the easy ones. Also remember to spin the camera!

Somewhere beyond all of that, there is a cave you should find and explore that will give you something to melt the ice.

But I got some trouble. First, how many “deal or no deal” quest in this map? I did it before, but I have jgot it second time and it’s requirement is same to the first one?
Second. I have collected 15 seasell but how to get “The Tomb of Anakโ€™Hul” quest ?
meanwhile, I have destroyed the Althar (like a box) and two Obelisks inside the moutain (near to althar box, lead to the impasse stair)
Last one, where is kodo or koto?

    Like

    • You need to do all of the jungle city Special Agent’s quests before you get to Deal or No Deal. It’s the final one of his chain.

There is a secret area that leads to a secret switch that activates a secret bridge. Only once you’ve found all of that, will the number of seashells be tested.

The Koto hides in a cavern that leads off the south wall of one of the cave chambers. Keep your eyes peeled for hidden entrances.

    • I have done all of special agent quest, and I got “deal or no deal” quest from him second times, so I can not find the place that I could finish it (When I do “deal or no deal” in the first time, I have kill all of bandit and Murgul in corner near to the cave).
In the other hand, according to https://raodaozao.wordpress.com/wreckage/quest-guide/, I have collect enough 15 seasell and found the broken bridge in north west corner of the cave, but I can not activate this quest.

      • I’m not sure I understand what you’re asking. If there are two instances of Deal or No Deal in the quest log, then the quest has incorrectly fired twice and there is nothing more to do: this would be a bug.

Do you have a single stack of the correct number of seashells in your inventory (or in one of your backpacks) when you step between the pillars?

“This Wreckage”… How many quests are there? 53?
What did you change/add in the Gamma Version?

“When the Freedom slips away”… I cant find the White Murloc could you help me a bit?
I found that Emerald but I can’t place it on the Obelisk near the Murloc village, where i killed that Mulgul Boss. Any help?

    Like

    • Ohh and before I forget… Does the Archstone have any use? And what exactly happens after I placed all the Phat Lewts at the Altar?

      Like

    • Aye, 53 quests. New to version Gamma were things like Ancient Knowledge’s Upgrade quest, Kelljn the samurai, the Hollow Sword, Seagoats… Plus lots of little bitty refinements and new items across the game.

You can’t place the emerald in the obelisk until it’s time to do so; progression through the quest is required first. The White Murloc is a master of hiding, so you might need something to… shed light on the situation.

The Arthstone is a powerful artefact and the Phat Lewts are a scam. ๐Ÿ™‚

Second: How to upgrade Ancient ? (enpower for diamond quest)
Third: Where is Stantopool? (to finish Demonlish quest ? I don’t remember clearly)
Fourth: What can I do with ancient text and Seasell?
Fifith : How to release the sword that look like Lich King?

    Like

    • Yx needs to go to the Special Agent in “Agent City”, the secret town in the jungle. The activation radius is perhaps a little small; make sure you’ve dragged Yx close enough to trigger the response.

To upgrade Ancient Knowledge, take the empty crystal to the fountain in the north-east corner of the temple. There’s a break in the wall that leads to it — place the crystal in the fountain to empower it.

Stentopol is the Murloc town at the south-east corner of the temple.

Ancient texts are valuable to merchants. Any special quest texts will be marked with the description “Important Item” — if a text doesn’t have this label, there is nothing important about it and you’re best to sell it. Secret seashells are… well, their purpose is a secret!

Look around in the caves for a source of heat. The old walls are crumbly and there are many natural caves that can be accessed through cracks in the walls.

I’ve been playing and replaying this map ever since I first got wind of it a year ago, and I’m loving it. One question though: Where are the Grints located in the North Annex (e.g. the area outside of the entrance leading into the mountain)?

I’m pretty sure I’ve gotten all of the Grints in the other areas (if I recall correctly):

    – Beach: One just west of the village and one close to where the civilian was caged at the beginning of the game…

    – Swamp: One on the path leading to/from the captured turtle owner and one on a short side path close to the temple door…

    – Jungle/Abandoned City/Agent Base: One close to the temple door, and one on the main path in the jungle…

    – Mountain: One on the main path leading to area of the the two villages and ???

My memory’s rusty so I might have gotten some of them muddled in my head…hopefully you can help me out as this has really bugged me (and I’m the kind of OCD RPG player who has to find everything). Thanks!

  31. Hi RDZ
I am a big fan of yours and had played “When the Freedom Slips Away” and loved it. I have been trying to download “This Wreckage” for 2 days but everytime I clicked on the download link that you provided, the result is always just a plain text saying “It Works!”. I have checked my Internet and there is no problem with it, so I’m not sure if war3.incgamers.com is down or something?
How else do I get the map? Would you please email me the map?

  32. Thanks For The Epic Map Rao Dao Zao.
I still haven’t finished it ( well I’m one of those who finishes all the side quests ) and I’m stuck searching for the seabank to go kill the whalehunters so I was wandering for the whole swamp killing everything that moved or wasn’t willing to move but still didn’t find it
could someone here lend me a hand?

  33. hi, i just finished the game after enjoying it for 10 hours or so…and i’m planning on doing it one more time and solo (no companions), but the problem is i want to complete all quest possible so, is there a way to uh..like, make your companion get stuck somewhere so they wouldn’t follow???tnx
oh and btw…i found a little problem that required me to reload the game, the enemy who has stairs behind him (forgot the name),which u need to kill…i kinda used the “banish” on him and he ran away, and i can’t follow him because of an imaginary boundary…
    great game nonetheless

    • There is no way to lose your companions short of killing them. You could just give them terrible equipment and go into a fight… Accidents will happen…

Banish lets people walk through walls? This is a distressing development.

      • he didn’t actually walk through walls…he simply run away to south and when i try to follow it says “i must kill…” like that…so its stuck…
but that was a quick reply, tnx

  35. This Wreckage is still the best WCIII-Rpg-map for me. Especially combined with the music from Unreal and Deus Ex this Wreckage is a masterpiece. Thank you so much!

  37. The first map was excellent…gameplay..music(i got hookep up fast)..story 10/10…it made me reinstall wc3 after being so bored with it.The second map…masterpiece..I’ve spent many hours playing it…encountering no problems at all.Congratulations…you’ve done a wonderful job.

P.S …i kinda need a little help ..can’t seem to find “a koto” to complete the quest…although i’ve searching 7 times the entire map JUST for it.
Btw…koto…it reminds me of the band named koto. There is a track “Visitors” (a slightly different from the original) which i like very much.
    Cheers!

    • “Koto” is the original name for the WC3 “Kodo”, as you can see by some texture paths. No other reference, I’m afraid.

The Koto is hidden inside the mountain cave. Look for cracks in the south walls of the underground complex.

  38. Seagoat: dunno where to start it?

pls anwewr to me! I finish all quest b4 that and i dont know how start that quest!

      • There are many seagoats in the swamp area (though as they have Wander, the longer the game goes the further they are able to range). They are small and green, though, so keep your eyes peeled for splashes in the water. If you think you’ve spotted one, try and drag-select to confirm and get a fix on its location.

      • I found one next to the scholar behind the waterfall but it says ‘it appears its not a seagoat’ and I tried finding in the swamp but looks like there are no more left

        Like

      • Yes, the Seagoat up there is a different Seagoat because it’s the Scholar’s pet (and you wouldn’t want to steal the poor guy’s pet, would you?). If you haven’t explicitly killed any Seagoats in the wild, then they should still be around somewhere in the main compound, the swamp or the jungle. If you have explicitly killed them all, then you deserve to never complete the quest. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

  39. Oh, and if in the future, for some reason, you plan to make a full voiced map (cutscenes etc), please leave an option (or download) to turn of those voices. (this goes for the voices made either by somebody else or by you). I mean no offense with this, but in some costum rpgs that i played it was those voices that ruined most of it.

  40. Finished the game, took me 14:29 (got 82821 points).

The new version is so much better than the last (well duh) It especially boosted the endgame (form the north gate to the end) part more that was somehow lacking. The heroes guild, the book, and the summon (the spiked thingy) where an exelent addon.

I manged to keep all of my companions alive (the grunt lived but the geek squad died ๐Ÿ˜ฆ ), that was the most difficult part of the whole endgame, keeping Nikki alive that is, she had the best armor i had, to bad there isn’t (or a was unable to find) and item that can cut the magic damage by %, since that has been killing me most of the time. That and “the area” (when the units that go to far from the Henrik ignore all and come back), that really messed some of my attacks on him.

I am probably going to play it trough again with another spells and suff.

Thank you for this great game ๐Ÿ™‚

But i like the last battle, it was special and i made use of the running shoes like never before.

The only thing that is missing is sort of a good bye (or whatever) dialog with the remaining characters.

  41. I have trouble finding the Seagoat quest giver. I just entered the cave (and defeated the boss after bloving things up).

    • I was only able to find it because I searched all over the map and was visiting the black spots on the map. Talk about space optimization, there is so much in this map, yet nothing looks that much cramped. (The Samurai quest also surprised me in the same way ).

  43. Even better, what if the island from the your first Henrik map ends up as being the center part of the archipelago, due to the floating islands that came crashing down from some reason (the reason that is located deeply beneath that island in the caves…)

    I’ll shut up now ๐Ÿ™‚
