Blog 866: UT Isn’t Just For Christmas

According to my calculations, Santa brought me a copy of Unreal Tournament (GOTYE) at the end of 2002. It was something of a surprise; up until then, there had been a touch of the “no ultra-violence” about my access to games, and yet there we were, with my parents spontaneously introducing me to one of the most violent games available at the time. (It is a strong possibility that they had no idea what they were actually buying.)

I might play UT2004 every December to mark the festive season, but the big day itself belongs to the original and best.

Blog 676: Bulletstorm

Ah yes, remember all those tirades about DRM, and how these services are invariably disabled long after the fact, making playable games unplayable by mere disconnection of their activation gateways? Sigh.

Luckily, there’s a hacked Games for Windows Live DLL floating around that shoves it out of the way to let you get on with playing Bulletstorm. No more achievements, alas, but at least we can get in. It’s long past time for another trip down this rollicking foul-mouthed rollercoaster romp…

Blog 675: Unreal II

Unreal II: The Awakening was Mass Effect before the world was ready for Mass Effect. A lone wolf saving the galaxy from an ancient evil, cruising about their own spaceship doing things their way? Saving the galaxy while helping your crew make peace with their pasts? Moderately hard sci-fi? Horrendously long level loading times? It’s all here!

Don’t get me wrong, I adore Unreal II, but there’s no denying a certain level of jankiness that a Mass Effect-level budget could probably have smoothed over. Even so, Unreal II got there first.
