Aside 40: Rebrand

Aside

I have decided to expand this blog’s title to Excerpts from the Life of Rao Dao Zao.

Now I’m hoping to be a professional and all, I need to divorce RDZ the larger-than-life personality from RDZ Industries the fictional-corporation-that-totally-isn’t-a-self-insert-anyway (how can a company be a self-insert? Watch and learn). I went a way towards this with the Project Y4 backstory, what with the company originally being called “RD&Z Industrial” after its three founding members (rather than it being an echo of an ARG from when I started modelling), so this is me just smoothing off the edges in the other direction. Not that anyone will be fooled.

Besides, all my SEO is for Rao Dao Zao. It’s much more distinctive.

Blog 574: NaNoWriM… Oh.

Writing is hard. You’d think it’s easy, just a tumble of words, but it isn’t. Not really.

Maybe the restrictions I feel are all self-imposed. Either way, this is a post mortem.

Politics. Bureaucracy. Mismanagement… I’ve got some bad news. The mission
failed.

Aside 38: More Words Than You Can Possibly Imagine

Aside

On day 11 I smashed the 20,000 word mark. I was at 20,001 when bath time called.

The rate of production has been as wonky as ever. I keep writing myself into holes and then falling behind for a day, before sweeping forward again to overtake the target. All sawtooth like.

I blow a whole chunk of the mystery in Chapter 4. Now, that’s about 15000 words in, but “chapter 4” still sounds like a bit too soon for the level of reveal that’s going on; then again, it sort of powers the other half of the novel. I’m only at Chapter 5 at the moment, so maybe my chapters are just far too dense. Not exactly following a conventional three-act structure either, so I’ll no doubt fall foul of that sooner or later.

On track for 50k? Not sure, really. I can still see it bottoming out at 40k. Maybe some alpha testers will help further down the line…

Blog 572: Deus Ex

You know, for all the times I’ve mentioned Deus Ex — how it shaped me, and still shapes me, and provides a baseline against which all things are judged — I’ve never actually blogged it properly.

I guess it’s about time we really went into why Deus Ex is actually the best game of all time. I doubt you’ll agree with me, but that’s what blogs are for, right?

Aside 37: NaNoWriMOAR

Aside

More than 10,000 words in five days, eh? I never knew I had it in me. (Actually I suspected, but nevermind.)

I got off to a flying start on the 1st and 2nd, seeing as the opening of This Desert Place is the most well-trodden part of it — I just had to turn an already defined plot into words, and, horror of horrors, find names for two characters. (“The Sage” and “The Scholar” weren’t even tenable in the original WC3 map, but you know what I’m like. Still haven’t named “The Commander” in This Wreckage either.)

I flagged on the 3rd and 4th as I tripped over and fell into an unplanned divergence. Or rather, not an unplanned divergence, but a divergence into which I had not previously poured sufficient thought. Originally a cheap side quest, its events needed a bit more… meat. I will no doubt need to go back and smooth the edges around that towards the end, but it shall do for now.

Still busting the average, it thinks I should hit the 50k target by the 25th. Exciting stuff!
